Case Study 9
Rail
Project: Design, construction and commissioning of major substation electrification upgrades across the London Underground Metropolitan Line, including all associated tunnel, cabling and protection systems – an essential early step in the process of increasing the capacity of the trains on the network.
Value: Project value circa £650m.
Client challenge: Eight substations across the Metropolitan Line required renewal – including two completely newbuild additions to the network – incorporating the installation of some 60km of both 11Kv & 22Kv cabling and 45km of fibre optics. Power upgrades were essential to allow the introduction of state-of-the-art signalling systems and the running of new, more efficient and sustainable rolling stock.
Rhead role: We supported our client in the development and implementation of a project-specific, integrated programme management strategy. The provision of highly experienced project and contract managers to provide timely and accurate management information via a web-based reporting capability, both at project level and portfolio view, enabled clear visibility of the project to all stakeholders.
Benefits: Our provision of a comprehensive managed service enabled the client to build on its expertise in the management of complex projects. Working seamlessly with the client to create an integrated project team, focused on the delivery of forensic planning, project controls and risk management, produced timely and accurate reporting. The ability to manage scope creep and mitigate programme impact through a robust change process resulted in a successful partnership of client and contractor to deliver the complex programme of works.
