Case Study 4
Energy
Project: Design, planning, procurement, construction and commissioning of a new 30 MW compressor station, part of the Milford Haven gas connection project.
Value: Multi million dollar 3 year project.
Client challenge: A new compressor station was required to provide compression to the 370km pipeline which links to the existing national gas transmission system and the LNG importation terminal at Milford Haven. The site at Felindre offered proximity to the pipeline, access routes nearby and the availability of power. It was also suitably distant from homes with the potential for suitable visual screening. This location, skirted by the M4 motorway, involved significant environmental and planning considerations and traffic management. The physical construction programme was a huge undertaking requiring the movement of approximately 200,000m3 of earthworks and the use of ground stabalisation. Its technical complexity has been enormous, involving the commissioning of two 15 MW gas turbines and a 30 MW electric variable speed drive connection to the high voltage transmission system.
Rhead role: To succeed, the project required significant and dedicated commercial and project management expertise. The Rhead Group was commissioned to provide a team in excess of 40 to manage the entire programme from initial design concept to final commissioning.
Benefits: Completed successfully on time and within budget, this station boosts the incoming gas pressure to enable its connection to the national network where it will support approximately 20% of Britain’s natural gas requirement.
